Arriving in Sierra Nevada without the right gear is one of the most common mistakes among beginners. Either you are cold and miserable, or you overheat and end up wet. This list helps you prepare for your first day (and the rest) without forgetting anything important.
Warm clothing: the layering rule
The key is not one thick coat but several layers you can add or remove through the day. Moisture-wicking base layer, fleece or similar mid-layer, and a waterproof windproof jacket. Same for trousers: proper ski pants beat jeans or cotton, which get wet and stay wet.
Protection for head, hands and eyes
Hat or buff for your ears, waterproof gloves (bring a spare pair in case they get wet) and sunglasses or ski goggles. In Sierra Nevada the sun reflected off snow is intense even on cloudy days. High-factor lip balm and face sunscreen.
Socks and footwear
Ski or hiking socks without annoying seams. Never wear two thick sock layers: they squeeze and make your feet colder. Comfortable shoes for walking around the resort before and after skiing.

If you rent at the resort, bring ID and your booking confirmation. If you have your own gear, check that bindings have been serviced and edges are sharp. Helmet highly recommended, essential for children. Spare base layer for after the lesson.

Water bottle or flask, energy bars, moisturiser and a fully charged phone. A small backpack or belt bag for essentials on the mountain. Cash or card for the slope restaurant.
